Howell Farms Wins 5th Master Grower Award

Posted by Mary Howell on April 30, 2021

Red Gold, Inc. annually selects a few farms from their already small and select group of growers for a Master Grower designation. Master Growers are chosen based on several factors with fruit quality, management practices, and land stewardship among them. We are proud to announce that Howell Farms received its 5th Master Grower Award at the recent Red Gold Grower’s virtual banquet.

Congratulations to Adam and Aaron Howell along with Grant Simpson and the whole farm team for excelling at a difficult job! The 2020 tomato growing season began early in May last year with nearly 40 acres of transplants in the ground – just before a late season freeze that destroyed them all. They simply started over and planted nearly 5 million tomato plants, then meticulously fertilized, cultivated and protected them from disease and insects throughout the 2020 growing season. Beginning in August, they harvested for 51 days straight sending over 680 semi-trailers full of ripe, Red Gold tomatoes to the factory to be processed into the “freshest, best tasting tomato products in the world”!

Howell Farms has grown tomatoes for Red Gold for over 25 years. You can learn more about our tomato production here.
