Cover Crops

Posted by Mary Howell on November 03, 2020

Approximately 85 semi-trailer loads of red, ripe tomatoes were harvested from this field a short time before this photo was taken. The same night the last load of tomatoes was hauled to Red Gold, the field was tilled and cover crop seed was sown. The shortage of rainfall delayed the germination of the seed, but it is now beginning to take hold. We have used cover crops for several years to control erosion, sequester fertilizer and improve general soil health. We continue to carefully study the economics of cover crop utilization as an annual production practice. Next to our family, our land is our most valuable resource, and we care for it like our lives depend on it – because they do!
